If you own a Google Pixel Tablet, then there’s good news. The firm just quietly extended its lifespan with a longer software update promise.
The Android slate cum smart display remains Google’s only tablet and it was due to get its last major OS software update in 2026. However, Google has updated its policy from three years to five.
Pixel Tablet owners will now get full support (not just security updates) until June 2028, possibly taking the device to Android 18.
The confirmation can be seen on the Google support page for the device, where it says, “This includes 5 years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops.”

However, it doesn’t match the UK support page, where it still states the guaranteed Android version updates only last until June 2026. It’s possible the page just hasn’t been updated yet.
The bad news?
Assuming Google doesn’t just limit this extension to US users, there’s a possible negative side to this.
It could mean that a new model is still way off from launching. This would tally with rumours from the last couple of years, which suggest Google cancelled the Pixel Tablet 2 but could be working on a Pixel Tablet 3.
We’d love to see a new tablet from the firm as the original, despite some issues, has a certain charm and offers a unique proposition in the tablet market with its speaker docking station.
While we keep our fingers crossed, it’s at least some good news for Pixel Tablet fans.
