If you thought it was time to say goodbye to the ghosts of Button House once and for all, you’re sorely mistaken. The BBC comedy show about a couple living in a haunted house is returning as a feature.
Ghosts: The Possession of Button House is written by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, the writers and creators of the original Ghosts TV series. Simon Hynd (Ghosts, Motherland, Can You Keep a Secret?) will direct the film.
The BBC’s plan to make a film spin-off of an award-winning series beloved by viewers isn’t a huge surprise. Recently, Downton Abbey did the same – after six seasons, three feature films were made. What’s more, Immortal Man, the movie sequel to Peaky Blinders, will premiere on Netflix soon.

When will the Ghosts film be released?
The BBC hasn’t announced when the feature will premiere yet, although filming will kick off in March 2026. Considering the time needed for work on set, post-production, and marketing, we estimate that the Ghosts movie could be released in 2027.
What’s the plot of the Ghosts film?
As with the release date, we can only speculate. In the final season of the series, Alison and Mike decided to sell Button House to a hotel company. In the epilogue, set several decades later, the elderly Coopers arrive at the estate, now converted into a luxury hotel, and book their “usual” suite, where their ghost friends await them.
The film could be set between seasons, telling some unknown adventure of Alison and Mike. However, the creators may also set it in Button House, once it’s turned into a hotel – fans of the series could then expect something like a comedic mix of The Shining and The White Lotus.

We thought we had said goodbye to Button House at the end of the final series. We never planned to come back. But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn’t resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure. We can’t wait to be together and to welcome some brilliant new faces, to tell this soul-stirring tale of life and death.
Who’s starring in the Ghosts film?
For now, the BBC hasn’t released the full cast list for the film. However, we know that the main duo will be back: Charlotte Ritchie will portray Alison Cooper, while Kiell Smith-Bynoe plays Mike Cooper.
Lolly Adefope will return as Kitty Higham, ghost of the Georgian noblewoman.
