It’s been years since that distinctive, eerie theme tune heralded a new episode – but The X-Files is set to return soon, albeit in an updated form.
Rumours that a reboot of the famous series was in the pipeline first emerged back in 2023. Chris Carter, the creator of the original series, revealed that Ryan Coogler, director of the Creed franchise, two Black Panther films, and the Oscar-winning The Sinners, approached him about a reboot.
Since then, little has been heard about the project. However, the new version of The X-Files is very much alive, with Hulu interested. The showrunner for the project is Jennifer Yale, who previously worked as a producer on the series See, Outlander, Legion and Your Friends & Neighbours. Ryan Coogler will write the script, direct and produce the pilot.
It will be another return of The X-Files, though the show’s first time as a reboot. The original series ran from 1993 to 2002. It was followed by two feature films – The X-Files and The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Two additional seasons of the series were then produced in 2016 and 2018.
When will The X-Files reboot be released?
The series is currently in the early stages of development, so it’s unlikely to premiere any time soon. Given the time required for production, filming, post-production, and marketing, we estimate the series may premiere in late 2027.
What will the plot of The X-Files reboot involve?
The series plot is currently kept under wraps. The logline for the series reads:
Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
You can be sure that the series will tell a new story – although it’s not out of the question that there will be references to the original show. Fans of The X-Files should therefore be ready to do a little detective work of their own when watching.
Who will star in The X-Files reboot?
Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will play the lead roles in the series. However, it doesn’t mean they will portray new versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully – Deadwyler and Patel will star as completely new characters, although we don’t know their names.
Danielle Deadwyler previously starred in the horror films I Saw the TV Glow and The Woman in the Yard. She’s also known for her roles in The Bear, Station Eleven, P-Valley, and From Scratch. Recently, she appeared alongside Taron Egerton in Netflix’s thriller, Carry-On.
Himesh Patel made a name for himself playing a shy Beatles fan in Yesterday. In the years that followed, he appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, the Netflix comedy Don’t Look Up, and Enola Holmes 2. He has also starred in the TV series Black Mirror and The Franchise.
Gillian Anderson, who played Agent Scully in the original series, revealed she read Ryan Coogler’s script and wants a cameo in the reboot.
