Android 17 is still months away from its full rollout, but Google is already testing its first major update on Pixel phones.
The company has just rolled out the first beta version of Android 17 QPR1 – that is, what will come to be the first quarterly platform release (aka major update) for Android 17 several months on from its debut – for Pixel devices.
Don’t get too excited, though. Build number CP31.260403.005.A1, as it’s affectionately known, doesn’t add any major new features to previous beta builds of Android 17.
This one appears to be predominantly aimed at squashing troublesome bugs and locking things down from those earlier builds.

What’s in Android 17 QPR1 beta 1?
Google’s official changelog over on the Android Developer website mentions four specific bugs that have been fixed, none of which are particularly thrilling.
One relates to a printer job-based crash, while another covers an error message that pops up in the Terminal app. There’s been some trouble with distortion effects in VoIP applications, as well as direct audio output – both of which have apparently been fixed.
Like we said, it’s not exactly headline stuff. Presumably we’ll start seeing the exciting new features added in future beta versions.
For now, anyone with a Google Pixel 6 or newer can test out this bare bones version of Android 17, provided you’re all signed up to the Android Beta Program.
The rest of us can wait (im)patiently for the full deal, with Android 17 likely to arrive in June or July.
