Black Friday is always a great time to buy a new phone, but we weren’t expecting the deals to be so good already.
If you’re in the market for a mid-range handset, Google’s Pixel 9a was probably already high on your list. It was only released in April, but felt like a prime candidate for significant savings this month.
And so it has proved, despite Black Friday itself not being until 28 November. This Pixel 9a offer is one you won’t want to miss.
What’s the deal?
The Pixel 9a usually starts at £499, but you don’t have to pay anything like that right now.
Amazon is offering the 128GB model for just £347 – that’s a hefty 30% discount, and the lowest price it’s ever been.
Other retailers aren’t exactly far behind, though, with Argos, Currys, John Lewis and Very all selling the device for £349.
The official Google Store is matching this, but it has an extra trick up its sleeve that could save you big money.
By trading in your old iPhone or Android handset, you could slash the cost of the Pixel 9a – or even get it for free.
An obvious example is upgrading from last year’s Pixel 8a. Provided your phone is still in good condition, you could get a £180 discount, meaning you only end up paying £169. Now that’s a bargain.
But it gets even better. If you’re not a fan of the size and weight of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, you could get £397 back by trading it in. It essentially means you’re getting a new phone for free and getting £48 of extra Google Store credit.
However, it’s important to note that these are estimates, and the actual price you’re offered may vary. If the final value is less than 75% of the initial estimate, the device will be returned to you.
Prices vary considerably depending on the age and original retail price of the device you’re trading in, but it’s well worth exploring.
If you already have a Google account, it’s worth checking your emails to see if you have a personalised discount for extra savings. The one we’ve seen offers an extra 5% off until 1 December.
Why buy it?
The Pixel 9a comfortably ranks as one of the very best mid-range phones you can buy. It’s also very easy to recommend – if you’re in the market for a reliable Android phone that’s great for day-to-day usage, look no further.
As our 4.5-star review explains, it gets all the fundamentals right, from a gorgeous 6.3-inch display to superb camera performance from the 48Mp main rear lens. Performance is solid, battery life is reliable and build quality is excellent, even if the design is a little controversial.

It also excels on the software side, with an update to Android 16 now available and seven years of software updates. The Pixel 9a is a great phone for the here and now, but it should also hold up well over time.
